A
sliver of land wedged between Mexico and Guatemala, Belize is a relatively
small country -- 280 km (174 m) long, and 109 km (68 m) wide at its broadest
point. It might be small but it is perfectly formed. Within its borders, Belize
probably has the greatest variety of landscapes, peoples, flora, and fauna of
any country of its size.
In the Maya Mountains there is dense rain forest. In the north, there is savanna
and sugarcane and of course, there is the incredible Caribbean cost line! Just
off the Eastern shore lies the Barrier Reef, a great wall of coral stretching
the length of the coast. Dotting the reef like punctuation marks are 175 cays ,
and further out to sea, three coral atolls - all superb for diving and
snorkeling.
Some of the cayes are no more than Robinson Crusoe islets of white coral sand
and mangroves, inhabited by frigate birds, pelicans, and the occasional
fisherman diving for conch and lobster. Others, like Ambergris Caye, are
becoming increasingly lively, with an ample supply of bars, restaurants, and
small hotels.
Surprisingly, considering its location, Belize is an English-speaking country.
Until 1981 Belize was a British colony and was formerly known as British
Honduras.
Compared to other Caribbean countries, Belize is less developed and less
expensive. However, this is changing quickly. Belize was recently named, 'The
best long range investment site in the Caribbean' by Caribbean Dateline
Magazine.
Many coastal areas and islands are being developed into tourist resorts and
luxury residential complexes. The more developed areas are already popular with
North American visitors and Belize is increasingly attracting Europeans.
The natural environment is one of Belize's biggest draws. It ranks among the
best scuba diving and game fishing destinations in the world. Belize's Barrier
Reef is the longest in the Western hemisphere stretching almost 140 miles from
Mexico to the Sapodilla Cayes.
Both as a tourist destination and property investment opportunity, Belize is
shaping up to be the next big thing in the Caribbean. With its natural
attractions, climate and political stability, the fundamentals are certainly
there.
