Estonia remains a little known country. Formerly part of the
Russian empire, it has only recently entered onto the international stage. This
is due to its recent EU accession and the increasing popularity of Tallinn, the
nation's capital, as a weekend destination for Western Europeans.
The country's historical obscurity should not lead you to believe it has
nothing to offer. Estonia has a unique national cuisine and has many charming
quirks, a thriving folk scene and remains very good value by international
standards.
The main focus for property investors is the quite beautiful capital, Tallinn.
The city offers many attractions to tourists, companies and investors. Property
prices rose steadily in the run up to EU membership. In the city centre prices
rose by around 12% last year. This growth has been driven by economic
development (GDP grew by 5.5% last year), a growing tourist industry, and the
expectations associated with EU entry.
