Latvia
is located on the Southeast coast of the Baltic Sea. It borders with Estonia,
Russia, Belarus and Lithuania. The area covers 64,589 sq km, with the coastline
of 500 km, distance north to south of 210 km and east to west of 450 km.
Riga , the capital, is 360 km from Helsinki, 430 km from Stockholm, 540 km from
Warsaw, 840 km from Berlin, and 850 km from Moscow.
Population
Latvia has a distinctly multi-ethnic society with a population of approximately
2.3 million, of which 57.6% are Latvians. Russians are the largest minority
with (29.6%), followed by Belarussians (4.1%), Ukraines (2.7%), Poles (2.5%)
and Lithuanians (1.4%). One third of the population live in Riga.
Climate
The climate in Latvia is seasonally variable with the normal summer temperature
ranging between 22°C-27°C and the normal winter ones between -12°C-2°C. Average
annual rainfall ranges from 600 mm to 650 mm.
