Sri Lanka has been inspiring its visitors for centuries. Even a seasoned explorer like Marco Polo considered it to be the finest island of its size in the entire world. A tropical gem, Sri Lanka holds so much appeal that many have given it pet names including 'Teardrop of India', 'Resplendent Isle' and ' Pearl of the Orient'. This colourful collection of names reveals the richness and beauty of a destination that continues to draw thousands of visitors today.

Sri Lanka has some stunning beaches, especially along the coastal stretch south of Colombo where there are palm-lined sandy expanses as far as the eye can see. The culture of Sri Lanka is both vibrant and enduring, and, has survived export to many places across the world. There is abundant wildlife, including elephants, and much ancient and inspiring architecture in the cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa. The hill country provides an escape from the heat of the plains and offers the opportunity to see the endless sea of tea plantations. To top it all off, the people are friendly, the food is delicious, and costs are low.

The coastal area south of the capital, Colombo, is where most foreigners and investors choose to buy property. The port of Galle is the main town along the south coast. It splendidly illustrates the solidity of the Dutch presence in Sri Lanka with a large Dutch Fort, built in 1663. Within the city there are many sturdy Dutch houses, museums, and churches. There is a small beach nearby, but many visitors and property investors tend to head for the beaches Unuwatuna, Weligama, Tangalla, Bentota, Negombo, and the island's most developed resort of Hikkaduwa.
