Lying just off the coast of Africa, 16 degrees
North and 24 degrees West, a thread of tropical islands pepper the
deep blue waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. The Cape Verde
Islands lie in a delicate cluster and are graced with some of the
most unspoilt beaches and beautiful scenery in the world today.
Already dubbed as the African Caribbean and expected to rival, if
not supersede the success of the Canary Islands, these treasured
islands are beginning to enjoy a surge in popularity and
prosperity.
In 1975, the islands separated from Portugal,
and have since been an independent republic. Their interiors are
wild and volcanic offering a captivating backdrop to the array of
beautiful beaches and all enjoy a consistently temperate climate
never varying much from an average 25˚C.
With leading travel companies and holiday
programmes predicting Cape Verde to be one of the top holiday
destinations of the future, the number of visitors to the islands
has increased. Expedia touted the area as one of the top ten
destinations for 2008 and as a result, Cape Verde is now the most
popular location for British holiday home buyers after Europe.
Statistical data goes yet further in
confirming the Islands’ promise and growing popularity. Real
economic growth in the country has averaged 6% over the past few
years with GDP growth reaching 7% in 2007. Tourism figures have
also rapidly increased along with growing amounts of foreign
investment. Significantly, the largest quota of FDI has been
injected into the tourism industry representing a 54% share. The
services-orientated economy contributes 73.9% of the country’s
overall GDP.
