Boasting one of the highest standards of
living in the world, with one of the best social welfare systems,
and the highest gross national product per capita, Denmark is often
seen as a model state. Though the majority of land is used for
agricultural purposes, Denmark’s main areas of employment are based
in services, manufacturing and industry. The country is a
long-standing EU member and has strong trade and business links
within Europe, in particular with Germany.
Like all Scandinavian countries, Denmark has a
highly educated and skilled population that is generally fluent in
English and is business orientated. It also has a flexible and
efficient workforce and the Danish telecommunications system is one
of the most advanced in the world whilst the level of computer
literacy is excellent. Unemployment sat at a healthy low of 1.9% at
the beginning of 2008.
Taxation is extensive in all areas, leading to
a higher cost of living compared to other European nations; however
Denmark provides enviable public services, healthcare, education
and infrastructure.
