Malaysia is spread across the South China Sea,
occupying a peninsula bordering Thailand and a third of the Island
of Borneo. The area is one of the most beautiful corners of the
world, famous for palm fringed white beaches, gentle seas and
rainforest, and is a key point for shipping and trade in South-East
Asia.
Geographically it has beautiful coastal areas,
including the popular resorts of Penang and Langkawi, and a
tropical interior. Several mountain ranges run through the country,
with forests of native sandalwood, teak and ebony. Malaysia also
has abundant mineral resources, oil and gas reserves, and a large
agricultural base.
Early introduction of rubber trees was highly
successful and became a main export for over a century. A former
British colony, the country’s political structure is based on the
UK’s. Independent since 1963, the country is now one of the main
dragon economies that saw huge growth in the mid-1990s but suffered
economic downturn in 1997. Economic reforms instigated in the early
part of this decade have proved fruitful and stability appears to
have been achieved. Now highly developed economically and
commercially, the government has implemented an ongoing programme
encouraging inward investment from overseas corporations and
individuals.
