Morocco, on the edge of North West Africa, is
a country brimming with the enticing allure of a foreign land.
Oozing colour, charm and a deep rooted culture, the country boasts
an enthralling history and a varied and beautiful landscape.
Sun-drenched terracotta buildings, a sultry fragrant air and deep
blue skies are home to a rich and fascinating race. The buzzing
souks and an aromatic cuisine, considered one of the best in the
world, together with year round high temperatures tempt visitors to
return time and again.
With snow capped mountain peaks, miles of
white beaches, undulating hills and old towns bustling with life,
Morocco has an enduring appeal which has attracted people from all
walks of life. Since the Beckhams’ visit to Morocco in 2006,
Morocco’s reputation for becoming the next trendy footballer haven
has rocketed with Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville and John Terry all
buying into ‘Plan Azur’ Projects in the up and coming Tangier
resorts. Winston Churchill, Jean Paul Gaultier and the Rolling
Stones as well as Kate Moss and P Diddy, have also succumbed to
Morocco’s charm and fallen for the country’s timeless appeal.
Recent figures confirm the country’s growing
popularity. In 2006 mainstream tourism was up by 18% and foreign
property investment was rife. In 2007 7.45 million holidaymakers
visited Morocco, a 13% increase from the previous 12 months, and
Morocco was named the fastest growing tourist market for the second
year in a row. Revenue created from tourism showed a 30% increase
resulting in 53 billion dirham - an all time high. There is a
strong belief that ‘Vision 2010’ will achieve its goal of
attracting 10 million tourists to Morocco annually thanks to a
massive 2.5 million euros which has been given to refresh current
advertising campaigns, a 20% increase in the advertising budget set
out for 2007. New print, poster and television advertisements will
work to encourage more British tourists to visit Morocco. Even now,
the tourist industry is contributing a significant amount to
Morocco’s GDP and is considered to be a key sector in the national
economy with growth predicted to be 6.8% in 2008.
