Peppered with a mixture of fortresses and castles, gothic churches
and 15th century town squares, evidence of Slovakia’s
vibrant history is prominent. A previously understated tourism
destination, the country has managed to stave off much of the
rampant commercialism which has overtaken some of Western Europe,
perhaps because of its Communist past. Peasant traditions and
quaint farm practices are still prevalent in many rural villages
and townships giving the country an authentic, original feel. With
nine national parks and acres of untouched countryside as well as
several castles, spas and picturesque lakes, Slovakia has a lot to
offer as a tourist destination and is enjoying growing
popularity.
Nestled in the very centre of Europe the
republic is bordered by Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and
Hungary. It links the prosperous western countries with the new
emerging markets and manufacturing wealth of Eastern Europe.
Furthermore, Slovakia has more natural beauty than most of the
markets which provide direct competition, and as advertising
budgets become more generous, travel and tourism figures are
increasing. Slovakia saw a 38.6% increase in UK tourists between
2006 and 2007, and the availability of cheap flights to and from
Western European cities such as London, Paris, Berlin and Dublin
mean tourism is expected to rise 5.3% in each year between 2008 and
2017. Flights are available from Britain to Slovakia with budget
airlines such as Sky Europe offering return flights from £60.
For those who prefer skiing or mountain
walking to over-crowded beaches or concreted resorts, Slovakia is
the ideal place for a second home whilst also offering promising
investment opportunities. Many of the purchasers who come here
combine Slovakia’s dual market strengths and often have a second
home for personal use before looking for an investment
property.
