Geography

Antigua and Barbuda are located to the north of the stretch of the Caribbean islands, with St Kitts and St Nevis situated to the west. The islands consist of mostly low-lying limestone and coral islands, with some higher volcanic areas.

Government

A member of the British Commonwealth, Antigua has Queen Elizabeth II as their chief of state who is represented on the island by Governor Louisse Lake-Tack. Antigua operates a parliamentary system of government, of whom Prime Minister Winston Baldwin Spencer is head, which consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Language

English is the official language but local dialects are also spoken.

Passports must be valid for at least six months beyond the period of stay.

Visas

Visas are not required by citizens from Britain, Australia, Canada, the US and most EU countries (excluding Cyprus, Czech Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, and the Slovak Republic) for stays of up to 6 months. Transit passengers continuing their journey within 24 hours and in the possession of an onward flight ticket do not require a visa.

  • Transfer between terminals: Only one terminal.
  • Transfer to the city: Taxis are available on a fixed-hire basis to St John's and local hotels. Flights are available to neighbouring islands.

  • Facilities: There are eating and drinking facilities, shopping, ATMs and banking facilities, including a bureau de change. The airport caters for disabled passengers.
  • Parking: Long and short term parking is available.

Standard of Living

Antigua and Barbuda have one of the highest standards of living in the East Caribbean, with most employers paying over the minimum wage. Due to a lack of personal income tax, Antiguans tend to have a greater amount of disposable income than on other Caribbean islands thus levels of car and property ownership are higher. Unemployment is low.

St John's is the capital of Antigua and Barbuda and has the largest population of all towns on the islands.
