Geography

Croatia is situated in southern Europe bordering Slovenia, Hungary and Italy. The country has many mountains and highlands and boasts some of the best pebbled beaches along the coastline. Sava, Danube and Drava are the main rivers that flow through Croatia. The main seaports are Rijeka, Pula, Zadar, Sibenik and Dubrovnik. Croatia has 1185 islands lying just off its coast offering quiet beaches and relaxing island life.

Government

Croatia joined the 1990 Constitution and the government has since been a democratic republic. In 1991 Croatia declared itself independent from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The country had planned to join the EU in February 2003 but plans were stalled and Croatia now hopes to become a member in 2009. Prime Minister Ivo Sanader is currently the head of government and President Stjepan Mesic the Head of State.

Language

Croatian is the official language of Croatia although many nationals speak Serbian, Italian, Slovak and German, this is mainly due to the growing tourist industry in the country.

Passports/Visa

Passports which are valid for at least six months beyond the departure date are required from British, USA, Canadian and Australian Citizens.

National of EU countries that have a valid ID card do not require a passport.

Visas

Visas are not required by all nationals for maximum stays of 90 days, if the stay is expected to be longer than a visa is required.

Dubrovnik Airport (DBV)

  • Location: The airport is situated 13 miles (21km) South of Dubrovnik.
  • Time: GMT + 1
  • Contacts: Tel:  2077 337/2077 3233.
  • Transfer between terminals: There is only one terminal in the airport.
  • Transfer to the city: Taxis are available just outside the airport. There is a public bus service which goes from the airport to either Dubrovnik or Cavtat.
  • Car rental: Car rental companies include Budget, Avis, Dollar and Hertz.
  • Facilities: The airport has coffee shops, cafes, tobacco shops, duty free shops and souvenir shops.

Standard of Living

Croatia enjoys a relatively high standard of living; the country has a modern European way of life and with the government focussing on tourism as a main sector, the country is continuously being redeveloped to allow for more comfortable lifestyles.
