Geography

Denmark is the southernmost Scandinavian country. The country offers a variety of vibrant cities with a mixture of rural countryside. The country borders the Baltic and North Sea and consists of 443 named islands which include Zealand, Funen, Vendsyssel-Thy, Lolland and Barnholm. The larger of the islands are connected by bridges but the smaller ones are connected by either ferries or small aircrafts. The country is situated in a northern location which means that the length of daylight each day can vary considerably.

Government

Denmark is a Kingdom with a Constitutional Monarchy. The head of state is Queen Margrethe 2nd since 1972 and is generally the source of all executive, judicial and legislative power. Since 2001 the head of government is Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen of the Venstre party. The current leading political party is the Social Democratic party lead by Helle Thorning-Schmidt. The government runs with a multi party system with the judicial branch as the Supreme Court where the monarch appoints judges for life.

Language

Danish is the official language. Some citizens speak Faroese and German but English is the main second language of Denmark.

Passports/Visa

Passport valid for a minimum of three months after return from Denmark required by all except EU nationals with a valid id card or a valid Gibraltar Identity Card issued to British Citizens or British Dependent Citizens for tourist visits of up to three months.

Visas

Visas are not required by any nationals but nationals of Australia, Canada and the USA are only allowed to stay for a maximum of three months on a tourist visit only and cannot take up paid employment for this length of stay.

Copenhagen Airport (CPH)

  • Location: The airport is located 8km (5 miles) southeast of Copenhagen.
  • Time: GMT + 1 (GMT + 2 from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October).

  • Terminals: 3
  • Transfer between terminals: A free transit bus connects all three terminals. Terminals 1 and 2 are connected by a corridor in Pier A.
  • Transfer to the city: There are direct high-speed trains to Copenhagen Central Station (journey time: 12 minutes), as well as a number of other destinations in Denmark and Sweden. The train station is situated in Terminal 3, taxis are readily available from ranks outside the Arrivals area of Terminals 1 and 3 and several buses including bus no. 30, 250S and 500S, run from the airport to the city centre and beyond. Night bus no.96N runs from Terminal 3 to Rådhuspladsen and other services include bus no.888 to Åarhus.  
  • Car rental: Car rental companies include Avis, Budget, Euro car and Hertz. Facilities: There are banks, bars and restaurants at the airport. Other facilities include a bureau de change, left luggage and ATM's in all the terminals. Play rooms and rest areas are available. Disabled facilities are good; those who need a wheelchair or have other special requirements should contact their airline in advance.

Standard of Living

Denmark has a very high standard of living, one of the best in world. Compared to other European countries salaries are relatively high with food and every day necessaries relatively cheap. For this reason taxes in Denmark are high. Denmark has a very good health care and education system which is paid for out of tax revenues so even though taxes are high the government returns a lot of the money in tax revenues.
