Two for the Price of One – A New Concept in Eco-Investment

July 7, 2010Article by Ray Withers

Dual Forestry, our latest Eco-Investment product, is a two-for-one offer in several ways. It unites environmental concerns with a profitable investment opportunity. It provides both income and capital returns. It is spread over plantations in two countries: Sri Lanka and Thailand. And, uniquely, we are offering two tropical hardwoods in one package: sandalwood and bamboo.

Some key facts about Dual Forestry:

  • Sandalwood – impressive long-term payout
  • Excellent anticipated returns up to 19.1% IRR
  • 16 year investment period – Annual income from Year 5
  • No ongoing maintenance fees or charges
  • Lump sum payment at Year 16
  • Independent of Equities, Property or Bonds
  • Forestry management company with 20 years expertise
  • INVEST £19,800 … GET A RETURN OF £203,000

The two components of Dual Forestry neatly balance each other. Bamboo is a practical product, a ‘zero waste’ plant of which every part has value from roots to shoots. It is used for everything from clothes, flooring and furniture to nutritious food products. Bamboo is the fastest growing tree on the planet, but demand still far exceeds supply. Sandalwood, by contrast, takes a long time to grow. It is a luxury item, used for top of the range cosmetics, soaps, aromatherapy and incense. Demand is rising rapidly, not least in the new economic giants of India and China.

For the investor, bamboo and sandalwood complement each other in another crucial respect. Fast-growing, flexible bamboo from Thailand provides a reliable source of income, whilst elegant, expensive Sri Lankan sandalwood offers a generous capital return. In this way, Dual Forestry brings together two types of investment plan as well as combining two products.

According to The Economist, “Average annual returns on timber have outstripped those from leading global stock indices, property, oil and gold for the past decade”. Dual Forestry offers impressive returns irrespective of stock market values. Best of all, it is an affordable investment. There are four packages, starting at £19,800 and rising to £72,000. An investment of £19,800 will yield a return of £203,000 – inclusive of income and lump sum.

Dual Forestry provides a very special opportunity to become involved in an industry that is at once ethical and profitable. It is an excellent addition to the discerning investor’s portfolio.

Some readers might need reassurance about the host countries for this product. Frenzied media reporting conjures up images of Red Shirts or Tamil Tigers around every corner, of political instability and civil unrest. Yet these images just scratch a very superficial surface. In Thailand, for example, there is an underlying stability and continuity that is still the envy of the region. It has found its own way of reconciling tradition with modernity and community cohesion with a high degree of individual freedom. This is not perfect (is anywhere?), but it can withstand an element of – highly localised – dissent.

Sri Lankans, meanwhile, know the value of peace and stability precisely because they are emerging from a long period of ethnic and religious tension. They are determined to put this colonial legacy behind them and fulfil the potential of their nation, which is generously endowed with resources as well as natural beauty. Investment is needed, and because it is highly valued it is secure. We shall be exploring further opportunities in Sri Lanka very shortly. It is another of the hidden jewels brought into the light by the shift of global economic power.
