From high speed to high tech – Birmingham is the Destination of the Future
March 10, 2014Article by Ray Withers
Recent years have seen an impressive transformation take place in Birmingham. The UK’s second most populous city has emerged as one of the country’s hotspots for new technology businesses.
A new look
On an aesthetic level, Birmingham’s regeneration has seen soaring Millennial structures replace the grey, industrial concrete that previously defined so much of the city’s appearance. The design of the rebuilt Bullring shopping centre was where it all began, leading to a wave of inspired architectural triumphs as Birmingham slowly commenced a city-wide revamp.
Nowadays, Birmingham has a modern, urban feel that is attracting both families and businesses to the city. The ‘Big City Plan’ behind the transformation incorporates changes to Birmingham’s library, airport and railway stations, all of which have or are set to make the city even more attractive.
With the High Speed Two rail network plans well underway, which will see journey times between Birmingham and London cut to a mere 48 minutes, the appeal of England’s second city will continue to grow. Businesses from a range of industries, including ICT, advanced manufacturing and life sciences, have already begun to flood the city, creating economic hubs for a range of sectors.
As Birmingham’s tech scene thrives, more businesses are looking to be a part of the city’s rise to technological glory, executive spending has risen and retail establishments have scaled up their wares in response to market demand.
A new feel
As well as celebrating the improvements of recent years, Birmingham is planning ahead for a long and successful future. Over 16,000 new businesses were started there in 2013 according to Start Up Britain and the city’s three universities are hard at work creating the next generation of entrepreneurs. The newly opened Greater Birmingham Professional Services Academy, which is working with seven of the city’s largest professional services employers, will also play a key part in contributing to the talent pool.
Birmingham’s progress has been such that the city recently took first place in the ‘FDI Destination of the Future’ category at Shanghai’s global investment awards. Foreign direct investors are queuing up to be a part of the city’s future, in relation to both its businesses and its property market.
