Perhaps best known for its leading racecourse, Doncaster is home to the world’s oldest continuing regulated horserace, the Doncaster Cup. With centuries of horse breeding in its heritage, the town has the honour of both starting and ending the flat season on turf.
But there’s much more to Doncaster than just horses and courses. From the Roman road that runs through the town on its way from York to Lincoln, to the two international jet-ski events to be held at the Lakeside area later this year, Doncaster is a town packed full of surprises.

Now, as well as its many traditional attractions, Doncaster is also due to benefit from an extensive facelift, with redundant buildings across the town centre set to be demolished and replaced with the more modern edifices that will make up the £300m Civic and Cultural Quarter. A host of new urban buildings have already been erected, breathing fresh life into Doncaster’s skyline as part of the extensive regeneration project.
Work is already underway on the £1m renovation of Doncaster Market, which will see the creation of a modern outdoor market and public square, with potentially hundreds of jobs being created in the town centre as a result of the reinvigorated area.
Indeed, the town has already benefited recently from extensive business investment, with a number of large companies relocating their transportation and logistics hubs to the area. The continuing regeneration work is expected to further the trend, attracting increasing numbers of young professionals to Doncaster’s thriving business environment.
A town on the up
The results of Doncaster’s regeneration initiative are already being felt when it comes to the town’s property market. According to the latest data from property search website Zoopla, property values in Doncaster have risen by 7.7% in the last year. The town has bucked the regional trend, with Land Registry figures revealing it as the only place in Yorkshire where prices are rising.
